About Lake Monticello

Lake Monticello is a reservoir set within a gated community of over 4,000 homes, built around a central lake of approximately 350–352 acres. It is fed by numerous natural springs and impounded by a dam on a tributary of the Rivanna River; its creation dates back to development efforts in the 1960s. The lake’s maximum depth is around 64–65 feet, with an average depth significantly lower.

Surrounding the lake is a mix of residential, recreational, and natural shoreline, with more than 20 miles of shoreline length. The community is managed by the Lake Monticello Owners’ Association, which maintains beaches, docks, boat ramps, parks, and other amenities. Environmental and water-level management is a priority, and standards are in place to preserve water quality and shoreline conditions.

Boat Ramps: The main public-use ramp (for members) is located at the marina; smaller ramps and docks are available at select beaches.

Docking & Storage: Temporary day-use docking is allowed in marked areas, and slip rentals are managed annually through the HOA.

Guest Procedures: Visitors must be registered by residents for entry; vehicle and trailer passes are verified at the security gate.

Safety & regulations

Boating Speed: Maximum 35 mph; adhere to all no-wake zones near beaches, docks, and narrow inlets.
Jet Skis & PWCs: Personal watercraft are not permitted on the lake.
Life Jackets: All passengers must carry Coast Guard–approved flotation devices; lighting is required after dusk.
