About Lake Bob Sandlin
Lake Bob Sandlin sits on Big Cypress Creek, about 5–6 miles southwest of Mount Pleasant and northwest of Pittsburg. It spans approximately 9,004 acres with a maximum depth near 65.6 feet and about 75 miles of shoreline. The reservoir was impounded in 1977 with the construction of Fort Sherman Dam and officially dedicated in June 1978. The dam, constructed starting in 1974, is an earthfill structure reaching 69 feet high and stretching some 10,800 feet long.
Lake Bob Sandlin serves as both a regional water supply and a beloved recreational destination. The lake benefits from a multi-talented ecosystem—rooted where the Piney Woods meet the Blackland Prairie ecoregions—providing excellent habitat for fish, birds, and diverse plant life. Fluctuations in water level are modest, hovering around 2–3 feet annually, and aquatic vegetation remains low at under 3% coverage.
