About Watauga Lake

Watauga Lake is a reservoir created in 1948 by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) with the construction of the Watauga Dam. Covering approximately 6,430 acres, the lake stretches across Carter and Johnson Counties, with more than half of its shoreline preserved within the Cherokee National Forest. This ensures the lake maintains its quiet, undeveloped character, making it one of the most scenic lakes in the state.

The lake is renowned for its water quality and mountain setting, drawing visitors year-round for fishing, boating, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Unlike some reservoirs, Watauga Lake is less commercialized, which contributes to its appeal as a peaceful retreat.
