About Indian Lake
Indian Lake is a man-made reservoir in Logan County in western Ohio, approximately 20 miles southeast of Lima. The lake is fringed by the villages of Russells Point and Lakeview, along with numerous island and peninsula communities that make up the “Indian Isles.” With more than 40 miles of shoreline, sheltered coves, canals, and marshy bays, the lake feels like a chain of interconnected basins rather than a single open bowl, creating a strong “lake town” atmosphere throughout the area.
Hydrologically, Indian Lake is a shallow, drainage-type impoundment fed by the north and south forks of the Upper Great Miami River along with tributaries such as Cherokee Mans Run, Blackhawk Creek, and Van Horn Creek. The reservoir covers about 5,104 acres, has a mean depth of roughly 4.5 feet, and a maximum depth of about 16 feet, with an estimated water volume of just over 20,600 acre-feet. Water leaves the lake through the dam spillway to form the Great Miami River, with an average hydraulic retention time of roughly 275 days. Managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, the lake’s normal pool elevation is around 996 feet above sea level, and extensive aquatic vegetation and wetlands support waterfowl, fish, and other wildlife while still providing a heavily used recreation destination.
