About Lake Mitchell

Lake Mitchell was created in 1923 when Alabama Power completed the construction of Mitchell Dam on the Coosa River. The reservoir spans 5,850 acres with nearly 147 miles of shoreline, cutting across both Chilton and Coosa counties. The dam was built to generate hydroelectric power, contributing significantly to Alabama’s energy needs, but over time the lake has become equally valuable as a recreational and ecological resource.
