About Lake Guntersville

Lake Guntersville is a TVA impoundment of the Tennessee River created by Guntersville Dam. The reservoir stretches roughly 75–76 miles from Guntersville Dam upstream and covers about 67,900–69,100 acres with nearly 890–962 miles of shoreline depending on measurement — creating an enormous, varied shoreline of coves, points and backwaters ideal for fishing and recreation. The dam that formed the lake was completed by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1939 as part of a New Deal-era program to improve navigation, flood control and power generation.

Ecologically and recreationally the lake supports dense aquatic vegetation, extensive fish habitat, and many public-access facilities. Lake Guntersville’s operating range is tightly controlled for navigation and recreation (winter elevation is kept near 593 ft; summer typical range near 594–595 ft), which helps maintain predictable boating and launch conditions. The reservoir also stores substantial flood capacity and powers a hydroelectric plant at the dam.

What you can do there

Fishing is the headline attraction: anglers pursue tournament-quality largemouth bass (including frequent 7–10 lb fish), crappie, spotted and smallmouth bass, striped/white bass and catfish. The lake’s shallow flats, flooded timber and vegetation beds support spawning and forage, making it exceptionally productive.

Boaters will find room to roam — wide navigation channels, long open reaches for high-speed boating, and sheltered coves for tubing or relaxing. Paddlers and canoeists can explore quieter fingers and backwaters for wildlife and more intimate scenery. The state park offers trails (hiking/biking), a beach complex, picnic shelters, a nature center, cabins and an 18-hole golf course, plus seasonal events and interpretive programs.

Access, marinas & ramps

Access is widespread: public boat ramps and county-managed launches are found around the lake plus several full-service marinas (fuel, slips, repairs and rentals). The Lake Guntersville State Park ramp is a major launch with capacity for large tournament events (ample parking, docks, electricity and facilities).
